i think a dragon is going to look pretty 'fierce' no matter what you do to it,
but i know what you're saying.
if you're getting it in color, i'd recommend you use lighter & softer colors in the piece. i think this would help it not look so harsh and 'boyish'.
your best bet would probably be to find a dragon picture closest to what you want [ using photobucket or any other image search engine ], printing it off and bringing it to the tattoo shop. Explain to the artist exactly what type of dragon you're going for and he / she should be able to draw it up the way you want it.
